Back to School, 2014

Hello, colleagues and friends!

It’s the beginning of the school year, a great time to inaugurate my blog about early care and child education for professionals working in this all-important field.

Here, I’ll share updates on stories, ideas, and practical tips to assist you in your role as a teacher or administrator.

Just to catch you up, my book, Think About It!: Reflective Communication Skills for Early Care and Education Professionals was self published earlier this year and is available for purchase at Redleaf Press.org.

The BIG NEWS is that in March She Writes Press picked it up for nationwide publication. The content of the book has not changed; only the title. It is now called Building Blocks for Reflective Communication: A Guide for Early Care and Education Professionals. It is available under this title at Amazon.com and at Barnes & Noble.

The book gathers my years of experience as the founder of two nonprofit early childhood agencies and addresses the unique tensions of the early childhood profession. It discusses the complexity of emotion, explains the executive function of the brain, examines unsafe and safe talk, and delves into deep listening.  The last chapter puts these skills to use in organizing and holding an effective team meeting that encourages open and honest communication.

Phew! That’s a lot, but it is filled with fun activities that explain and illustrate the concepts and makes them easy to learn.

This book is just for you, the adults in early care and education. Not the children. For you! I’ve already given three Reflective Communication workshops at child development centers this summer. We had a great time. Here are some more, scheduled for the fall and winter.
